- Dr. Malathi Shanmugam

Malathi Shanmugam was born and raised in Bangalore, India. In 1997, after completing the second year of a five-year DDS program at Chitaradurga’s SJM Dental College, she made a life-changing decision to study medicine in America. By 1999 she completed the Undergraduate/Pre-Med Program at Arizona State University. She graduated Doctor of Medicine from Ross University in 2006. As a resident at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Freehold, NJ she won the Best Resident Award 2008 and the Patient Service Award in 2009.

Following residency Dr. Shanmugam devoted the next eight years to developing her primary and acute care skills. Her first position was at DOCS, a leader in the burgeoning industry of multi-specialty groups that offer both urgent care and primary care services, at their Westchester, NY location. Dr. Shanmugam became adept at examining, diagnosing, treating, and referring patients for specialty care. She developed a strong rapport with her primary care patients, and especially enjoyed working in both pediatrics and geriatrics. Dr. Shanmugam was awarded their Best Doctor Award (Tri-State area) in 2012. During her four years at DOCS she also lectured at New York’s Mt. Sinai. In 2011 NBC TV news called upon her skill and expertise for a show on patient’s increased involvement in their own medical affairs. 

In 2013, Dr. Shanmugam joined the staff at Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie as a family physician.  In 2014, she took a position as a Primary Care/Urgent Care physician at Refuah, a non-profit health center in New York. Her two years at Refuah served as an opportunity to gain additional experience in women’s health. 

Dr. Shanmugam speaks English, Medical Spanish, Hindi, Tamil, and Kannada.

She relocated to Sacramento in 2016 and enjoyed  taking care of patients in the area for 4 years.  Her passion to serve the community gave rise to Sac City MD.  The practice which strives for outstanding patient care in December 2020.  Dr. Shanmugam continually strives towards treating and making a difference in patient lives here in Sacramento.
